An Examination
of Conscience Based On the Psalms
Let
the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O
Lord. (Psalm 19: 14)
- In my prayer, do I offer
Jesus worship and praise? Or do I keep my mind fixed only on myself and my
problems?
- Do I use my mouth for
building others up, or for tearing them down?
- Do I engage in gossip,
or have I allowed myself to get caught up in lies and deceptions?
- Have I told off-colour
or racist jokes,or encouraged others who have engaged in them?
Refrain
from anger, and forsake wrath. Do not fret--it only leads to evil. (Psalm 37:8)
- Have I allowed resentment
and anger against another to linger in my mind? Is there someone I need to
forgive, or some relationship that needs to be put right?
- When I feel that I have
been wronged, do I seek vengeance, or do I forgive? Do I look for a way to
correct the wrong peacefully, or do I allow a "root of bitterness"(Hebrews
12:15) to enter my heart?
- Do I allow myself to
be controlled by moods? Do I take authority over my emotions and seek the
peace and healing of the Lord?
Put
no confidence in extortion, and set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase,
do not set your heart on them.(Psalm 62:10)
- Is Jesus my greatest
treasure and the fulfillment of the deep desires of my heart?
- Do I place work and career
over my family and my relationship with the Lord?Have I been involved in any
dishonest business dealings? Have I treated anyone at work unfairly?
- Are there people whose
situations I envy? Do I let jealousy and a desire for more material wealth
dominate my mind and actions?
Who
shall ascend the hill of the Lord?...Those who have clean hands and pure hearts.
(Psalm 24:3,4)
- Have I given my mind
over to lustful thoughts or fantasies?
- Have I read pornography
or watched indecent movies or television shows?
- Have I sought to keep
a guard over how I look at other people?
